WORLD’S FIRST
CROSSWORD PUZZLE
In 1913, Arthur Wynne
created the world’s very first crossword puzzle for the puzzle page in Fun in the comic section of the New York World. Wynne came up with this
idea for the Christmas edition of the New
York World because he decided to create a new sort of puzzle to entertain
readers. He came up with the idea of a diamond-shaped grid with the word FUN
across the top squares. He then filled the rest of the grid with words,
numbered the squares and wrote definition clues for the words he had filled in.
This new puzzle has become extremely popular and has appeared in the newspaper
every week. After a couple of weeks, the name was changed from “Word-Cross” to
“Cross-Word.” Wynne experimented with a variety of different shapes for the
puzzle and eventually chose the shape of a rectangle for the very popular
puzzle.
WOMEN’S FASHION!
At the extravagant parties
thrown by Mr. Jay Gatsby, women are wearing their best clothes. They are often
wearing very fancy dresses, elaborate hats, and their hair in the bob style.
The dresses are very bright, colorful, and short. The dresses are often worn with
stockings or tights. The hat that is worn the most is called the cloche. This
is a very popular hat that fits very close to the skull and is worn over their
eyes. With this hat, the women are wearing their hair shorter and flatter. The
bob is a very popular hairstyle that is being seen at these huge parties. The
women began to bob their hair because famous stars are bobbing their hair
today.
